The Challenges of Symmetrical Dialogue: Reflections on Collaborative Research in Northeast Brazil

This article explores ways to promote symmetrical dialogue among knowledge-practices of artisanal fishing communities, primary education teachers, and academic researchers in the state Bahia, Brazil. We describe multiple engagements an inter- transdisciplinary project that integrates research, educational, conservation activities two communities living estuarine ecosystem. Most community members dedicate their efforts activities, harboring wide knowledge about local biocultural diversity. The promotes collaborative inclusion expertise school while also striving for inhabitants’ planning protected areas. collaboration aims at dialogues between support self-determination biodiversity conservation. Challenges such symmetrization, including disagreements tensions diverse actors, not only appear encounters knowledge, but within interdisciplinary involving natural sciences, social philosophy.
